HIGHWAY 30 CONSTRUCTION AND SPECIAL ENFORCEMENT BY THE NEVADA DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC SAFETY
Beginning the week of April 8th, the Iowa Department of Transportation will be closing the eastbound lanes of Highway 30 from Interstate 35 to Airport Road in Nevada. This closure will continue through the summer until the lanes are reconstructed resulting in the westbound lanes being “head to head” during this period. Due to the amount of traffic and the danger from the at-grade crossings drivers will have to use extreme care in this area during the construction.
Nevada Fire and EMS have developed a number of response protocols to effectively respond to emergencies in the construction corridor and to serve our township residents south of Highway 30 while the at-grade intersections are closed.
The Nevada Police Department has received an extra-enforcement grant from the Iowa DOT to monitor the safety of the public and the contractors in the construction zone during this project. Extra patrols using enforcement tools such as radar will be positioned east of Airport Road to slow traffic into the construction funnel and to protect the intersections at 6th Street, S-14, and Airport Road during this period.
We urge local citizens to have an effective driving strategy if their travels take them through this area, including avoiding the area if a sufficient alternate route can be developed. West bound travel from Nevada will be severely affected by this project and motorists must maintain extra vigilance at the Nevada intersections to Highway 30. Concerns can be forwarded to the Nevada Department of Public Safety 515-382-4593.
Updates regarding the construction will be provided on the City’s website (http://www.cityofnevadaiowa.org) along with Nevada Police Department’s Facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/pages/Nevada-Iowa-Police-Department/224569773787) as new information becomes available.
