POLICE DEPARTMENT NEWS

Press Release:

Tuesday, August 9th, 2016

On Thursday, August 4th, 2016, at about 6:24pm, a lightning strike took place at 67004 190th Street. This is the location of one of the stover piles owned and maintained by the DuPont. This was recorded by the National Weather Service out of Des Moines, and witnessed by a person in the area. The Nevada Fire Department immediately responded.
After several hours of fighting the fire, the wind shifted causing embers to ignite another stover pile. The decision was made to monitor the fire and attempt to prevent any other stover pile to ignite.
Since the fire there have been complaints of ash, embers, smoke and smell. The Nevada Public Safety Department has been in contact with DuPont officials and the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to monitor the fire and attempt to control its by-products.
Should you have concerns about the stover fire and want to file a complaint, contact the DNR Field Office #5, located in Ames, Iowa. Their phone number is 515-725-0268.
Please be patient as everyone involved is doing all that can be done to rectify this situation. As the stover fire is in the Nevada Fire District, if you have complaints or questions please contact Public Safety Director Ricardo Martinez II, 515-382-4593.
