History of the Nevada Police Department

Chief Floyd "Baldy" BaldusThe Nevada Police Department has had 5 different police chiefs since the first one was appointed in 1960. The very first Nevada Police Chief, Floyd "Baldy" Baldus, came on the Nevada Police force in 1955 as a police officer. Mayor Frank Lounsberry created the post of chief in 1960 to which he appointed Baldus.

Chief Baldus served eleven years in the department and ended his service under Mayor Herb Shearman in December of 1966. When Chief Baldus retired, the police department had a total of four officers. After retirement, Chief Baldus was still available for reserve duty and continued to collect money for the City of Nevada from the parking meters as well as keeping them in good working order.

Chief Ray CouserIn January of 1967, Ray Couser, a Nevada Police Officer since 1965, was appointed as Police Chief. After almost 27 years of service to the City of Nevada, Chief Couser retired from the police department in November of 1992 under Mayor Hugo Hagen. During Couser's 25 years as Police Chief, he had many officers in his charge. There were also 3 parking "meter maids" and 2 office secretaries.

Chief Mark SeeIn 1993, Nevada Police Officer Mark See was appointed as the new Police Chief. In January of 2004, after 26 years of full time service to the police department, Chief See ended his service under Mayor Patrick Sheets.

During that same year, on July 4, Mayor Sheets swore in the current Police Chief, Michael W. Tupper who served until October of 2011.

In 2012 Sgt Ricardo Martinez II, was promoted to Chief of Police and Jeff Theulen was hired as the Public Safety Director.

In the last 49 years, the Nevada Police Department has employed 46 police officers, 3 parking meter maids, and 6 secretaries.

Today the Department has 10 full time officers, 7 police Officers, as Sergeant, The Chief, and the Public Safety Director who is a sworn officer.

For a number of years the Nevada Police Department only had one patrol car. Today the department has seven patrol vehicles. Over the years these patrol cars have changed in style and equipment used in and out of the vehicles.
Over the last several years, the Nevada Police Department has seen many changes from faces, vehicles, buildings and city ordinances.
