NEVADA HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMISSION –APRIL 2, 2009 MINUTES

The Nevada Historic Preservation Commission met in regular session on April 2, 2009, at the Nevada City Hall, 1209 6th Street, Nevada, Iowa.

Chair Jan Gammon presided and at 5:34 p.m. she convened the meeting.  The following were present: Jan Gammon, Maxine Harms (left at 7:48 p.m.), Jamie Hughet, Phil Page, and James Stage.  Absent:  Tom Richards (arrived at 7:04 p.m.) and Dario Zaffarano.  Also present was Donna Mosinski.

Motion by Commission Member Phil Page, and seconded by Commission Member Maxine Harms, to approve the agenda as posted.  Following voice vote, the Chair declared the motion carried.

Motion by Commission Member Phil Page, seconded by Commission Member Maxine Harms, to approve the February 16, 2009 minutes as presented.  Following voice vote, the Chair declared the motion carried.

The Commission discussed adding various items to their page on the City of Nevada website including the downtown walking brochure, google maps, and a link to the State Historical Society of Iowa website.

Jan asked the commission for any nominations for IHPA.  The project had to be accomplished in the last two years.  She asked everyone to think about nominations for next year.

NEA Grants are arts oriented and the commission discussed if the owners of the Camelot would be interested in applying for a grant.

HDRP Grants are due in by May 15 and the Nevada Historical Society is applying for several grants.  The Camelot was discussed as a possibility for this grant also.  There were several grants that the owners of the Camelot could apply for to help repair the theater, including RIF and Story County Community Foundation.

Jan reviewed the CLG Grant and stated Marlys did a drive-thru of the west side of Nevada and found prospective properties for a survey.  The Commission agreed to proceed with the application and asked that it be placed on the next agenda.

The Commission discussed the month of May being Preservation Month and what they could do to promote it.  James would take pictures of historical buildings around Nevada and possibly create a display for the library.  He would also talk to the Nevada Journal about an article and a photo contest.

Jan brought brochures for trainings in Wisconsin and Ottumwa.  Jamie would like to go to a different training on May 1.  She was told to go ahead and sign up and then turn in her expenses to Jan to be paid at the next meeting.
Jan reviewed the Comprehensive Plan and the Nevada Code of Ordinances that pertained to Historic Districts.  She also handed out the ordinance for demolition.  

Tom Richards arrived at 7:04 p.m.

Tom discussed Lincoln Highway meeting that he went to and that Prairie Rivers has a special grant to assist in the preservation of Lincoln Highway.  He would like to develop an activity between Colo and Nevada along Lincoln Highway.

Maxine Harms left at 7:48 p.m.

The next meeting is scheduled for June 4, 2009 at 5:30 p.m.

Motion by Commission Member Phil Page, seconded by Commission Member Tom Richards, to adjourn.  Following voice vote, the Chair declared the motion carried and at 7:59 p.m. the meeting adjourned.
